Lot #1012A, a first year MG 42 machine gun with its factory original slab side charging handle Poulin Antiques & Auctions
  • Lot #1012A, a first year MG-42 machine gun with its factory original slab side charging handle. This 8mm Mauser has a 20" barrel and serial #9827. It features early pattern sights with a windage-adjustable front and is equipped with an early pattern MG34/42 bipod with locking legs that clip on the barrel jacket. Of all the WW2 German machine guns, none is more iconic and well-known than the German MG-42. According to Poulin's class III category expert, This Holy Grail level example is the earliest I've ever seen, and amazingly, it retains its original slab sided cocking handle and early top cover. This slab side charging handle was nearly always retrofitted in favor of the later vertical style cocking handle. I know of four total known slab-side guns, and this is the only 1942 gun I am aware of that didn't get updated.

This cal. 9 mm firearm, known as the Transformer Gun due to its ability fold into a compact package, has a 10-3/4" barrel and is serial #4205. It features a blade front sight, hood, and folding rear sight aperture. It is estimated that only 7,000 of these firearms were produced, with the French military adopting the MAT-49 in its place. The bulk of these SMGs were used by the French Foreign Legion in Indochina and Algeria. This example was picked up in a pile of captured Viet Cong weapons near Saigon in 1964. This gun and the Veteran's story is detailed in the book War Trophies Weapons From Vietnam Volume II by Keith Seafield.
