All eyes will be on one of the top lot in this sale - #3272 - Wyatt Earp's (American, 1848-1929) Colt SAA revolver. This fully provenanced firearm, owned by the legendary Western lawmen, is estimated at $100,000-400,000. After settling in Los Angeles in the early years of the 20th century, Earp befriended James "Jimmy" Mitchell who became a close confidante and was even in the room with Wyatt's wife when Wyatt died in 1929. This firearm is being sold with an archive of provenance materials, including a copy of Earp's obituary and a short story about Earp written by Mitchell; notarized letters between Mitchell and Earp families; documentation on the revolver's history; and a Colt Factory archive letter. Nearly a century after his passing, Earp retains his mythical status on the Western Frontier given his ability to remain unscathed during heated gun battles, including The Gunfight at the OK Corral in 1881. This historically important gun comes from the Norm Greenberg Collection.
Four other extraordinary revolvers on offer in this signature fall include:
Lot #3273, the only factory documented Colt 12" Buntline Special SAA revolver extant - This Colt has serial #28822 and is the exact firearm as pictured in Graham, Kopec & Moore's book, A Study Of The Colt Single Action Army Revolver; this reference also notes that this SAA is the only 12" Buntline Special known to exist. It has a factory original globe front sight and matching numbers on its frame, trigger guard frame, butt, cylinder, and barrel. It includes its original case hardened frame and hammer, six shot fluted cylinder, blued grip frame, and original one piece walnut grip. It notes, in part, “This French trial pistol (No 2) was submitted in early 1935 and was named by the French as the “1935” trials gun. This pistol is 1 of 7 built for the trials, all in 7.65mm Long”... Each test trial pistol was slightly different, and “No. 2 has a unique short slide release lever... This early 1935 French trial pistol (No. 2) is amazingly equipped with a single column 7.65mm Long caliber magazine....The French did not select any of the 7 prototypes, and they were either retained in French arsenals or at the factory."
