PORTLAND, Maine - April 8, 2009
A Civil War-era cannonball, stored in a basement for years as a family collectible, was detonated by a bomb squad on Monday.
The Falmouth, Maine resident contacted police about the cannonball, which, it was discovered, was filled with gunpowder.
The Portland Press Herald says the bomb squad safely detonated the device in a rock quarry near U.S. 1 on the Falmouth-Cumberland line. Traffic was stopped briefly when the charge detonated.
