10th Annual Taps at the Tower June 18-24 at the National WWI Museum and Memorial

The Taps ceremony will begin each evening at approximately 8:45 p.m. at the National WWI Museum and Memorial June 18-24.

What: The National WWI Museum and Memorial presents the 10th annual Taps at the Tower, a moving ceremony featuring an iconic rendition of Taps at sunset (approximately 8:45 p.m.) from Sunday, June 18 – Saturday, June 24, 2023.

The public is invited to enjoy the Museum and Memorial grounds before moving to the base of the Liberty Memorial Tower to witness Taps being played at sunset. On some evenings Taps will be preceded by special programming, as indicated below.

Sunday, June 18 - 7:30 p.m.: Flag Day Concert 2023 |Memorial Courtyard

A live patriotic music concert from the American Legion Band! This musical revue pays tribute to our nation's flag, which was adopted by Congress on June 14, 1777.

Monday, June 19 - 6:30 p.m.: The Wounded World: W.E.B. Du Bois & WWI | Auditorium and YouTube Live

Learn more about the influential scholar-activist and his complicated relationship to the Great War – a story of hope, disillusionment and transformation.

Tuesday, June 20 - 6:30 p.m.: World Refugee Day 2023 |Auditorium and YouTube Live

Approximately 10 million civilians were displaced from their homes during WWI. On World Refugee Day, learn about the modern-day refugee experience in Kansas City.

Wednesday, June 21 - 7 p.m.: Make Music KC Concert 2023 |Memorial Courtyard

As part of the international Fête de la Musique, enjoy a free concert prior to Taps at the Tower courtesy of KCMO Parks and Rec.

Why: Taps is a musical piece that has a rich and storied history within the United States Military. Often played at civilian events and funerals, Taps honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. This year’s ceremonies will pay tribute to the history of Taps, and honor all those who served.
