I just heard Lowe's Memorial Day ad that starts off with something like, "Memorial Day...It's all about projects".
I am not a hyper-patriot or anything, but I have to question the wisdom of downplaying the meaning of Memorial Day by trying to promote more sales. I am sure their intent was not to direct a slap in the face of fallen soldiers...for whom Memorial Day is really about (as first celebrated in 1868 and recognized by an Act of Congress more than a 100 years later in 1971).
Sure, it's a free-market and freedom of expression permits one to step around or right over the graves of soldiers how ever they see fit. I, for one, though, won't be celebrating Memorial Day by going to Lowe's.
