Rock Island offers sneak preview of Gateway Collection sale

Rock Island Auction Co. has released a 16-page flyer highlighting some of the lots in its Gateway Collection firearms sale Sept. 7-9.

The collection was assembled over 50 years by an astute businessman who had an eye and passion for rare, high-conditioned and historically significant firearms.

RIAC auctioneers point out that this was a collection assembled over "a half century of studying, searching and building." Many of the pieces offered have been off the market and have remained unknown to collectors since as early as the 1960s.

Taking center stage in the collection is the finest and most complete grouping of the Colt Model 1873 Peacemaker ever to be offered for sale. Also of interest is a comprehensive selection of Winchesters, Smith & Wesson, percussion Colts, Civil War arms, and U.S. and German military firearms.

The auctioneers say the Gateway Collection "possesses very significant attribute of other legendary 20th-century arms collections, and in our opinion, single collection to ever come to market at one time."
