Awards recognize Marine history efforts

Marine Corps Heritage Foundation recognizes excellence in advancing, preserving Marine history at annual awards ceremony

Eighteen awards were presented to individuals and organizations that have contributed to advancing and preserving Marine Corps history at the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s Annual Awards Ceremony on April 16, 2011, at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va.

Marine Corps Heritage Foundation President & CEO Lt. Gen. Ron Christmas, USMC, (Ret) presented the awards. Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James F. Amos served as the keynote speaker. Fred Smith, chairman, president and CEO of FedEx Corp., a Marine, also spoke and was among the evening’s honorees.

Each year, the Foundation presents a series of awards to both Marines and civilian community members in categories including historical scholarship, journalism, letters and arts, and more. Recipients this year hailed from across the country, including the United States territory of Guam and one from New Zealand. With five award recipients, Virginia topped the list as the state with the greatest number of award recipients this year.

“The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation was pleased to recognize such significant and meaningful work,” said Lt. Gen. Ron Christmas, USMC, (Ret). “Each of these individuals and organizations contributed something important to preserving and honoring Marine Corps history. Contributions such as these are vital to Marines being able to tell our story, of how we shape history.”
