New Facility Prepares to Open at Gettysburg National Military Park

GETTYSBURG, Pa–The public is going to be allowed into the new museum and visitor center at Gettysburg National Military Park starting April 14.gettysburg museum2.jpg

The facility is part of a $125 million project that will also preserve the park’s artifacts and archives, return parts of the battlefield to their 1863 condition and create an endowment for future needs.

Construction began in 2005 on the $103 million facility, said Katie Lawhon, public affairs specialist for the park. The organization expects an additional $30 million in visitor spending each year as a result of the new facility.

The foundation has secured more than $105 million toward a goal of $125 million for its campaign to preserve Gettysburg. Campaign funds are being used to build, furnish and operate the new 139,000-square-foot facility; preserve the park’s collection of Civil War artifacts and archives; support battlefield rehabilitation and preservation programs; and create an endowment to support future preservation and maintenance needs.

Park curators are already moving items into the collection storage area.
