Suspects arrested, sign found in pieces

December 28, 2009

This famous sign above the entrance to the Auschwitz Museum was recently stolen and recovered in pieces.

With the arrest of five men, Polish police are investigating the Dec. 18th theft of the famous sign over Auschwitz. The 60-pound sign, reading "Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work Sets You Free"), was found two days after the theft. It had been cut into three pieces and hidden under the snow in a nearby woods.

Three of the five men arrested in northern Poland have confessed to the crime. Because one of the suspects resides outside Poland, investigators are expanding their investigation with the help of foreign police.

The lack of adequate security at the WWII concentration camp which now serves as a museum is also under scrutiny. Only one camera monitored the entrance.
