WILLIAMSPORT, Md. – Mark your calendars. The 6th Annual WWII Weekend in Williamsport is fast approaching. The Oct. 11-13 event is free to the public and will include living history displays and reenactor groups representing Allied and Axis forces and the Home Front during World War II. There will be entertainment, shows, guest speakers, a swing dance, a concert, food, vendors, a raffle and many historical displays.
The weekend will feature a theme of 1943, and events begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night, Oct. 11, with a free night at the movies, showing of the 1943 film “Action in the North Atlantic,” together with WWII newsreels, a Popeye cartoon and a Three Stooges short.
The grounds will be open to the public from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Saturday’s events include a 1940s fashion show to be held at the Springfield Barn at 2 p.m.
The “Ultimate Abbott & Costello Tribute Show” will also return for performances at 10 a.m. & 4 p.m. on Saturday, and noon on Sunday. Also returning this year, after a 2-year hiatus, is the parade through the Town of Williamsport. The event participants and Veterans, together with the Williamsport High School Homecoming Parade, will take over the town for one huge parade! Step off is at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
And, don’t miss the USO Dance on Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m., featuring the famous swing band “Jump Alley.” Admission to the dance is $5 at the door.
Saturday and Sunday will both feature living history displays and reenactment groups portraying soldiers and civilians during war time, both in service overseas and on the home front.
Throughout the weekend there will be guest speakers and individual unit displays including: a German Field Hospital; US 1st Division Troops in Italy; American Red Cross Clubmobile workers; a German Cafe; British North Staffordshire Regiment; German uniform & weapons displays; vehicle displays; weapons demonstrations and more.
In addition, the local 4-H club will be conduction a “scrap drive,” and the Washington County Master Gardeners will be on hand with a Victory Garden display in the wagon shed. Sunday’s events will include a church service in the Barn at 10 a.m., and the event will conclude on Sunday with a “Salute to Veterans Concert” performed by the Williamsport Community Band at 3 p.m.
Food will be available throughout the weekend, and vendors will be on site with authentic and reproduction WWII items, including collectibles, clothing, field items and period refreshments. The Town Museum will be open and conducting Veteran interviews throughout the weekend. There will be also be a Raffle of WWII period items, including an original WWII Navy Uniform, two original “A” Mileage Ration Stickers, and other great vintage items!
